Press Room: Demco Interiors helps to breathe new life into old school building

Demco Interiors helps to breathe new life into old school building

Demco Interiors worked directly with Explore York, on the interior design for a new community hub – The Centre @Burnholme. The new centre is located on the site of the old Burnholme Community College and is home to a reading cafe, learning spaces, a local history service and reference library as well as space for community groups.

Library at new community hub

Cllr Nigel Ayre, the council’s executive member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “The Centre @Burnholme is a fantastic facility for the local community and will provide a real hub for the wider Burnholme development.

“The sensitive use of the original school building is a great example of how we can breathe new life into old buildings and I’m particularly delighted that we’re opening the newly re-located local library with all the great facilities that our modern Explore centres offer.”

The brief was to create a relaxing and inviting interior that would welcome all ages from the local community. Moving away from a traditional library space, Demco’s design team space planned their popular white Promo library shelving to weave across the ground floor, so visitors can pick up a book, access wi-fi, sit and relax or enjoy a coffee at the same time.

Integrating shelving across the whole interior means that more stock can be accommodated and allows visitors to use the space without barriers or boundaries, making it more user-friendly and relaxing than a traditional structured space.

The colour palette brings bright candy colours to walls, library shelves, chairs and is picked up in finer detail on the edges of the super cool, space saving quick pick units. Colour matching, soft furnishings, with details such as high back and arms to suit a range of ages, are clustered through the ground floor space inviting everyone to take a break. The area is complete with white bar height continuous workstations for BYOD with built in power and connection sockets and mustard yellow bar height stools.

Vivien Low, Lead Designer at Demco Interiors, said: “It was a pleasure working with Explore York on the project and we are delighted with the end result. We were pleased to be able to create an open plan design, with linkages made through colour, product and furnishings, without compromising on important public library design requirements. Sightlines, stock management, accessibility and usability were always top of the design agenda and I think we have produced a seamless blend of function and form. We look forward to working again with Explore York.”
