Press Room: Express Bi-folding Doors answers prayer for chapel conversion

Express Bi-folding Doors answers prayer for chapel conversion

Express Bi-folding Doors has helped to transform a traditional brick-built chapel into a modern family home – with a stunning end result.

Angled windows fit chapel feel

The client was converting a chapel dating from 1882. It had been built with solid walls, gables and vaulted roofs supported on trusses and purlin framework. The new owners wanted to transform the chapel into a contemporary property, so Express Bi-folding doors used its aluminium products to create a contrast to the old church building and make it feel like a modern home rather than an old chapel.

The conversion of the main chapel created a lounge and dining area at one end, with a kitchen at the other end. Above the kitchen, on a new mezzanine floor, is a bedroom and bathroom. The smaller side hall to the chapel, along with the extension, provides a hallway, two further bedrooms, a bathroom and a utility room.

The client initially wanted arched windows, which isn’t something that Express Bi-folding Doors can offer so instead the company produced angled windows and finished the windows both internally and externally with shaped pressings to suit the window arches.

The original rear porch and the rear extension were demolished and replaced with a new larger duo pitched roof extension.

Chapel conversion

Express Bi-folding Doors used a whole host of its glazing solutions:

  • 1 x two panel XP-Glide door with shaped apex above
  • 2 x French doors
  • 1 x single door
  • 13 x casement windows
  • 5 x fixed windows
  • 17 x sets of aluminium pressings to finish off shaped frames.
