UK Flood Barriers completes major underpass project

A project to protect homes and businesses from floodwater coming through a bridge underpass has been successfully completed by UK Flood Barriers.

Aberdeen underpass flood gates

Aberdeen City Council awarded UK Flood Barriers principal contractor status on the project, the first time the company had achieved this accolade. The contract was to install flood defence measures to protect homes and businesses that sit close to a 100-year-old bridge underpass in Aberdeen. Previously, water from the swollen River Dee had flooded through the underpass.

This major project involved the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke double leaf steel flood gates and extensive civils work to ensure the bridge installation site was structurally sound and the surrounding area continued to be accessible.

The UK Flood Barriers team came up with a design for double leaf steel, mitred swing hinge steel Manual Flood Gates with bespoke securing posts. The 4m high x 5m wide doors can be seen in open and closed positions in the accompanying images.

Working in such a demanding environment with a busy road running above the site presented a number of challenges, however, the UK Flood Barriers team still managed to deliver the ‘end to end’ project on time, within budget and to the clients’ satisfaction.
