Types and Uses
More and more basements are being put to use as living accommodation or commercial space but this is obviously an area that needs very careful attention when it comes to waterproofing. Expert contractors can advise on the best way of keeping the area dry.
There are two main methods of waterproofing a basement – the cementitious tanking approach, using renders and slurries to hold water back, or a cavity drain system to manage and expel any water ingress.
Most companies will offer both types of waterproofing and choose the best solution for an individual property. Both have advantages and disadvantages.
The cementitious approach can be messy and involves long drying-out times, but requires no sump system. The cavity drain system needs less preparation and does not delay the decorating phase if used with a dry lining frame, but may require a pump leading to maintenance costs.
