Function and beauty in garden fencing

Garden fencing may be highly functional – defining boundaries and keeping children and pets secure – but that does not mean it cannot also be beautiful. Garden designers promote the idea of ‘vertical gardening’ to make the best use of available space, and also creating separate ‘rooms’ to add interest. Fences have a vital role to play in achieving these aims.

As well as aesthetic appeal, fences need to be of quality materials for maximum durability. Erecting fences is a major task in the garden and no-one wants to be having to make constant repairs and risk damaging established planting. With the vagaries of the British weather, there are no guarantees that a fence will never come down, but starting off with the best products and taking care over installation will undoubtedly help to extend the lifespan of any garden fence.

Metal fencing is occasionally used in gardens, but it can look harsh and industrial, so timber is by far the most popular choice. It is attractive, environmentally friendly and offers numerous design possibilities with the ability to form different shapes and stain or paint it to suit the property surroundings.

It is worth checking the supply chain of the timber to see that it is sustainably sourced.

A newcomer is composite fencing in the style of timber, in a choice of colours.
