Addagrip helps penguins go on parade

Addagrip is delighted to report that its latest customers – the penguins at Edinburgh Zoo – have given their seal of approval to Addagrip surfacing! Penguins Rock – the zoo’s revamped penguin pool – includes mock sandy beaches and rocky areas combined with Addagrip surfacing installed by approved contractor, The Fraser Bruce Group.

Penguins Rock at Edinburgh Zoo

In the early part of 2012, The Fraser Bruce Group was invited to discuss the water loss issues from the penguin pool at Edinburgh Zoo. The main pool at Penguins Rock is Europe’s largest outdoor penguin pool at 65 metres long and 3.5 metres deep at its deepest point, containing 1.2 million litres of water.

In conjunction with an overall re-design and waterproofing of the penguin pool, The Fraser Bruce Group incorporated a free draining resin system for the perimeter of the compound and within the penguin nesting area.

The main requirement was to ensure that the penguins were not standing on permanently wet surfaces during their nesting periods. The 30mm thick application on the nesting area allows surface water to drain through to the original surface that was waterproofed with a single coat resin membrane, allowing water to run to the existing drains.

Addagrip Addastone TP UV resin with a 6-10mm Brittany Bronze aggregate was installed within the nesting area, with a resin bound Terrabound 6mm Rhine Gold at a depth of 16mm for the perimeter surface.

If you visit Edinburgh Zoo this summer, why don’t you tweet photos of the penguins using Addagrip’s Twitter handle @addagrip.
